  Who is Rod Stephens?  
 
 

Synopsis: Author and consultant. Rod has written more than 200 articles published in such magazines as Dr. Dobb's Journal, Visual Basic Developer, Hardcore Visual Basic, Visual Basic Programmer's Journal, Microsoft Office and Visual Basic for Applications Developer, Delphi Informant, and J++ Informant (and The Dragon a loooong time ago).

Rod has also written 14 books, several of which have been translated into other languages, and more than 2 million published words.


Rod grew up mostly in San Diego. As an undergraduate, he attended the University of California at San Diego where he studied and taught mathematics.

After that, he did graduate work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying and teaching mathematics and computer science. While there he worked on a large-scale transhipment project that helped Gilette optimize their national product distribution.

Next Rod moved to GTE Laboratories Incorporated (a company that no longer exists) where he was a Senior Member of Technical Staff.

Rod has been an application developer since 1980. During that time he has designed and implemented more than half a dozen large commercial applications, several of which have won corporate awards. His projects have included:

  • Interactive Playbook, software for professional football players (see this article)
  • Route finding code that became an ancestor of SuperPages.com
  • IFTA fuel tax software for the State of Minnesota
  • SFDS telephone circuit design system
  • NEDAS switch change management system
  • TONICS switch alarm monitoring system
  • GEODES geographic information system
  • ACE collections and billing automation system
  • Crystal Ball enrollment projection software

Rod currently lives in Boulder Colorado with his wife Michelle, daughter Amy, son Ken, cat Cobe, and dog Snortimer. He spends his time writing, playing volleyball, softball, hiking, and generally enjoying the Colorado outdoors.
